Topographic Effects on Stormflow Acidity

چکیده

Topographic Effects on Stormflow Acidity David Wolock 1 This paper describes the theoretical and observed effects of topography onstormflow acidity in upland, forested watersheds. The theoretical effects were determined by a sensitivity analysis using the hydrologic model TOPMODEL. The observed effects were determined by an analysis of topographic and stormflow acidity data collected from eight watersheds in Wales, Great Britain. Results of the analyses indicated that the observed effects of topography were consistent with the theoretical expectations; that is, topography has an important effect on flow path, and that flow path, in turn, has an effect on stormflow acidity.

Topographic controls on the chemistry of subsurface stormflow

Models are needed that describe how topography and other watershed characteristics affect the chemical composition of runoff waters, yet little spatially distributed data exist to develop such models. A topographically driven flushing mechanism for nitrate (NO3 ) and dissolved organic carbon has been described in recent literature; however, this mechanism has not yet been thoroughly tested. A 2...

A virtual experiment on the effects of evaporation and intensity smoothing by canopy interception on subsurface stormflow generation

The effects of canopy evaporation and intensity smoothing during rain events on hillslope subsurface stormflow are poorly understood. While watershed manipulation experiments have suggested that these processes are important at long timescales, such processes may also be important in storm-timescale responses. Notwithstanding, there are few hillslopes for which both internal subsurface stormflo...

A paradigm shift in stormflow predictions for active tectonic regions with large-magnitude storms: generalisation of catchment observations by hydraulic sensitivity analysis and insight into soil-layer evolution

In active tectonic regions with large-magnitude storms, it is still difficult to predict stormflow responses by distributed runoff models from the catchment properties without a parameter calibration using observational data. This paper represents an attempt to address the problem. A review of observational studies showed that the stormflow generation mechanism was heterogeneous and complex, bu...

Drivers of atmospheric nitrate processing and export in forested catchments

Increased deposition of reactive atmospheric N has resulted in the nitrogen saturation of many forested catchments worldwide. Isotope-based studies from multiple forest sites report low proportions (mean5 10%) of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate in streams during baseflow, regardless of N deposition or nitrate export rates. Given similar proportions of atmospheric nitrate in baseflow across a va...

Evaluation of regional acid sensitivity predictions using field data: issues of scale and heterogeneity

An acid waters sensitivity map has been widely used as a background resource for assessing potential impacts of forest management on stream water acidity within Wales. The validity of this approach has been explored by comparing predicted acid sensitivity with the observed acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) in stream runoff using data sets from two regional surveys of a major area of acidificat...
